Marriages, Quinceañeras, Anniversaries

Weddings

The Priests, Deacon and Staff thank you for your interest in having your marriage celebration at St. Mary’s Cathedral, the mother church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. If you decide to have your wedding here, we will do everything to ensure that it is a blessed and successful day. Marriage is a lifelong commitment, and the Church is there in a supportive role. We at St. Mary’s Cathedral want to make you feel welcome.

Why Marry in the Church?

The joining of two persons in matrimony is one of the most important events in one’s life. Since marriage was ordained by God (Genesis 2:22-24, Matthew 19:4-6), marriage in the Church is not only a personal or family occasion; it is, above all, the sacred union of two believing persons, in union with God. In the letter of Paul to the Ephesians we read: The two shall be made as one. This mystery has many applications, and I am saying it applies to Christ and the Church.” (Ephesians) 5:31). In the Sacrament of Marriage, the bride and groom are the ministers. The priest or deacon is there as the Church’s witness.

Wedding Requirements

For a wedding to take place in the Catholic Church, at least one of the parties must be Catholic. It is an Archdiocesan policy that you must book your wedding at least six (6) months in advance.

(If you have been married before, i.e. divorced, more paperwork must be done before you can book a date for your wedding at the Cathedral. If this is the case, please contact your parish church and explain the situation.)
