Their discipleship has brought the love of God to countless people, and it is fitting that their leadership and service be recognized by the Mother Church of the Archdiocese. If you decide to have your wedding here, we will do everything to ensure that it is a blessed and successful day. Marriage is a lifelong commitment, and the Church is there in a supportive role. We at St. Mary’s Cathedral want to make you feel welcome. Why Marry in the Church? The joining of two persons in matrimony is one of the most important events in one’s life. Since marriage was ordained by God (Genesis 2:22-24, Matthew 19:4-6), marriage in the Church is not only a personal or family occasion; it is, above all, the sacred union of two believing persons, in union with God. In the letter of Paul to the Ephesians we read: The two shall be made as one. This mystery has many applications, and I am saying it applies to Christ and the Church.” (Ephesians) 5:31). In the Sacrament of Marriage, the bride and groom are the ministers. The priest or deacon is there as the Church’s witness. Wedding Requirements For a wedding to take place in…

Cathedral Choir School St. Mary’s Cathedral Choir School is a work in progress. It all started in 2009, when Christoph Tietze was asked by Msgr. John Talesfore, former rector of the cathedral, and Sr. Carmen Santiuste to build up the St. Brigid School Choir and to make a feasibility study into the possibility of establishing a choir school at St. Brigid’s. Old St. Mary’s, built in 1854, is located on California Street at Grant Avenue. A second St. Mary’s Cathedral was built on Van Ness Avenue in 1891, but this structure was destroyed by fire in 1962. Immediately following that disastrous fire, Archbishop Joseph McGucken gathered his consultors to begin the process of planning and constructing a new cathedral. The Archbishop commissioned three well known local architects for the project – Angus McSweeney, Paul A. Ryan and John Michael Lee – who began submitting preliminary sketches for the new cathedral which ranged from traditional Romanesque to California mission style.
